Design for Pets Featuring the Slender House

Are you hoping to have a better aesthetic in your home, but worried your pets are holding you back from doing what you want? If so, don’t lose hope… we have creative ideas for you! In this blog post you will find solutions to the most problematic areas in your home, that will leave it feeling cozy and aesthetically pleasing.

Slender House Hallway Mirror and Vase

Sometimes the answer to your decor challenges is a matter of elevating things… both aesthetically and literally! I mounted this beautiful mirror by Normann Copenhagen from Woonwinkel on the wall outside the office and styled it with a colorful modern vase filled with everlasting flowers. The mirror reflects the beautiful stairwell mural while keeping the vase up and away from curious paws.

TEXTURE: We know that anything from carpet and area rugs to grasscloth wallpaper, reupholstered furniture, and chunky throw blankets and pillows can be a giant scratcher for cats to get their paws on! So it’s time to get creative about how we add texture where it’s not accessible to our furry friends.

  • Purchase fabrics and pillows like leather and velvet. It’s not a sure deal that your pets won’t love these fabrics too, but it’s less likely they will take a liking to them as they do with a textured wool.

  • Get texture up on the walls where they can’t reach. Having concrete or tile floors without rugs can feel cold, so add warmth to your walls with textured art, acrylic paint, hang a rug or beautiful piece of fabric. If you have framed glass it can feel colder, so consider something that has more texture and dimension to make up for the lack of texture on the floors or accessible surfaces.

  • Get a scratcher that isn’t an eye sore. We love how cat accessories are becoming better and better over the years. A few of our faves:

  • Consider having a cozy welcome mat that you only bring out when guests come over. When they leave, roll it up and store in your entry closet to keep it fresh! We picked this colorful mat from Etsy!

LANTS & ACCESSORIES: Dogs, cats, and even little kids love to dig in the dirt and mess with vases with flowers! So how do we enjoy plants and accessories without the headache?

  • Consider hanging plants on your wall. Just like the mounted mirror shelf outside of the office, elevate your plants so you can enjoy them at eye level and they get to keep their roots where they like them… in the soil!

Slender House Guest Bathroom

In our Slender House project, we had no choice but to get creative, so we found these amazing eco-friendly wall planters to hang above the toilet to give the bathroom personality and keep the dirt in the planter. The most important thing is to make sure the planters have drainage, which these do!

  • Keep a big plant in your office or a guest room where you can easily monitor or close the door. Open spaces like living rooms and kitchens might be harder to manage!

  • Keep up high where not accessible. As for accessories like vases with flowers put them up where they can’t access them (like a very tall mantel) or provide a place on the wall where they can live.

There are so many creative ways to design a space where the result is a beautiful home for you and your furry friends. Have more pet design questions? Message us @tealandscott on Instagram!
