Keeping Your Home Organized With Kids

Are you struggling with toys and belongings of your babies, toddlers, or kids taking over your home? We have some solutions that have worked for us and we'd love to share them with you, from decluttering the chaos of toys to our secret sauce for maintaining your sanity!

If there's one thing we know for certain, it's that having kids can make it challenging to keep our homes looking the way we want them. However, it is possible to create a flow that makes it more manageable.

Treehouse Bunk Room

To keep the room from looking cluttered, the kids keep their books organized by color so it looks like a rainbow of art.

A few things that have worked for us:

  • Have a few toys in each room for kids that blend into the environment or can be stored away where you can’t see them. For example, in an office, have a nice basket of wood blocks so it isn’t an eye sore and can keep you focused on your work when they come in to play! In a kitchen, store wood play food for the toddler years that they can play with while you cook. In the laundry room, set up a kid’s table so they can learn to fold laundry with you!

  • Our other tip for maintaining sanity in the house is to opt for fewer plastic items and choose durable wooden ones (as you can see above) that will stand the test of time. You can keep them for your grandkids or pass them along to a friend. While they might require a slightly higher initial investment, they're not only better for the environment but also enhance the aesthetic of your home. Honestly, some of the wooden toys available these days are so charming that we've even used them as styling props on our adult bookshelves!

  • Our secret sauce which probably sounds like an obvious one: DONATE and PURGE every quarter (at least)! Given how fast little kids outgrow clothes, shoes, and toys, we make trips to the local consignment shop WEEKLY. Create a system in your garage or by your backdoor so you can easily grab and go when you are running errands! Kids also love to participate when they realize it’s going to someone who could use it more than they will.

Treehouse Dining Room

Every room in the Treehouse has a kids’ zone. In this beautiful built-in, we organized 6 baskets for all of their art supplies. While it may seem strange or scary to put kid stuff in brand-new cabinetry, the kids learn how to take care of their belongings and feel a sense of responsibility to keep things organized in the home. It’s also great having kids post up to draw at the dining table after school while dinner is being made!

In kids’ rooms, create a place for everything to be put away and live. It can be hard since their interests change frequently, but having lots of boxes, baskets and bins to try and keep things organized helps a ton! If you are finding clothes and toys aren’t fitting anymore, see if there is another place in the house they could live and if not, maybe it’s time to consign or donate.
