Scoping Your Project

So, you've decided it's time to make some changes to your home, whether it's sprucing up your bedroom, giving your wood floors a new lease on life, or diving into a major remodel. But where do you start? Well, the first step is all about defining your goals.

Let us help you figure out how define your goals and scope your project in this blog!

Raleigh Hills Primary Bedroom

Is your goal to add color to your home? This might take shape in a small remodel/refresh, updating pillows and accessories. This neutral bedroom is balanced with color pops in the lumbar pillow from The Citizenry, a uniquely shaped lamp, and a plant moment. The pillow plays off the blush sheets while the grain of the bedside table adds another level of interest.

Ask yourself, what's your endgame here? Are you looking to give your space a fresh look, improve its functionality, boost your home's value, or perhaps address a specific issue that's been bugging you? Once your goals are crystal clear, you can move on to the fun part – making those decisions:

  • Create a wish list and try to prioritize between needs and wants by identifying everything you want to do in the space and back up to what are essential improvements (needs) and desirable upgrades (wants). This will be the starting point for scoping the project. The best improvements always are the ones that have a long term value effect on the functionality of the home. Focus first on those.

  • Once the needs are identified you can then begin setting a budget which dramatically affects the scope of the project or what you can accomplish with the funds allocated. Plan for contingencies whenever you do a project try to anticipate unexpected costs or changes that your budget can cover.

  • If the project is too large for you to manage, the scope should include any professionals needed like a builder or specialty sub contractor or designer to help invest your funds wisely. Those professional fees need to be accounted for before you begin the project.

A medium project might focus on doing a full update on one focal point in the home. In this case, the primary bathroom got a full refresh. The updated vanity, mirror, sconces, and gorgeous green tile peeking through elevates the space. This is a fabulous moment to wash your face in and doesn’t hurt that it’s a great selling point for the home.

A larger scale project involves more experts and contractors. The Verde Vista project did not stop at the primary bathroom. The entire home was taken to the studs and revamped. To get this lofty look in the living room, we vaulted the ceiling by removing the roof and reframing. There was a tremendous amount of collaboration with the architect and engineer. But boy did it pay off, hello natural light!

When it comes to home improvement, we’ve got two categories. First up, the good ol’ “do it yourself” (DIY). These are the ones you roll up your sleeves, grab your tools, and dive right in. Think updating the furniture, paint or styling - the stuff you might feel more confident in tackling.

The other category? Well, that’s for the bigger, more complex home improvement projects. You know the ones that might be a tad outside your skill set including electrical, plumbing or structural changes. For these, it’s time to call in the pros! Hiring professional contractors is often the best approach to ensure not only compliance with building codes, high quality results, and workmanship that will have a long term value improvement on the home.

Now, before you jump into any project, take a step back and think about your budget, timeline, and what you'll gain from it. That way, you can make well-informed decisions and create a home that truly reflects your style and needs!
