Tile Selection 101

Tile Selection For Your Space, Maintenance, and Installation Tips

The amount of choices you face when remodeling is very overwhelming. The aesthetic look you want to create must be trumped by practicality and longevity. Tile is one area where you REALLY don’t want to select the wrong material for the space, so let’s get started with some tips! The most important consideration is how you will be using the space, which leads us to our first topic, surface.

SURFACE & APPLICATION
It’s important to understand and get to know the specific areas where tiles will be installed, whether it's on walls, floors, or in moisture-prone zones like bathrooms or kitchens. Different tile types are engineered to withstand varying conditions. If using in a wet space, confirm the tile is suitable for high levels of moisture. Oftentimes this will be non-skid or no gloss tiles to avoid slippage.

TILE MATERIAL KNOWLEDGE
Familiarize yourself with the properties of different tile materials. Ceramic is made of water, sand, and clay, and is prone to chipping. Here is an example of a ceramic tile I love! Porcelain is a through tile and won’t show as many chips. Here is an example of porcelain I love. Porcelain is usually the most cost-effective and can be used in both wet or dry spaces. Natural stone and glass are other materials that have distinct characteristics in terms of durability, maintenance, and aesthetics. Mama doesn’t use glass, that’s too 80’s, but knowing trends glass tile might be back before we know it!

SIZE AND LAYOUT PLANNING
Consider the size of the tiles in relation to the size of the space. Larger tiles can create a sense of openness, while smaller ones may contribute to a more intricate design. Plan the layout to avoid awkward cuts and ensure a balanced appearance.

COLOR PALETTE CONSIDERATIONS
Explore the impact of color in your design. Lighter colors can make a space feel larger and brighter, while darker hues can add depth and warmth. Choose a color palette that aligns with your overall aesthetic and the atmosphere you want to create.

GROUT SELECTION & MAINTENANCE
Grout is not just a functional element but also contributes to the overall aesthetic. Choose your grout color and type based on the desired look and ease of maintenance. Darker grouts may hide stains but can be challenging to maintain. You can select a grout color that allows the tile to pop, and can even go so far as to create a custom color for your grout as a design choice. The popular choice is to select a grout option that is less striking or busy.

In our Raleigh Hills project, we used grout as a color accent.

TRAFFIC USAGE & PATTERNS
Assess the level of foot traffic and the intended use of the tiled area. High-traffic areas require durable and easy-to-clean tiles, while decorative tiles may be suitable for less frequented spaces. If it’s a high-texture tile, then a wall application may be better suited.

BUDGETARY PLANNING
Establish a realistic budget for your tile project. Factor in the cost of tiles, grout, and professional installation if desired. This ensures that your remodeling plans align with your financial constraints.

INSTALLATION CONSIDERATIONS
Evaluate whether you will undertake the installation yourself or hire a professional. Some tiles may require specific installation techniques. Understanding the complexity of the process can influence your decision.

PATTERN & DESIGN PREFERENCES
Explore different tile patterns and designs to enhance the visual appeal of your space. From classic layouts to intricate mosaics, understanding design possibilities allows you to tailor the tiles to your personal style.
