Our Favorite Bathroom Accessories

My favorite bathroom accessory is Clorox bleach and a rag but we are not allowed to use that anymore!

All joking aside, I love a CLEAN bathroom with nothing on the counter. First and foremost, I design bathrooms so the tile and the cabinetry reflect the personality and practicality of the space. Whether it's a kid’s splash zone or a more elegant guest bathroom, when choosing accessories you have to make the same considerations. Accessories often pull the whole look together and allow for the space to function. A tray on a coffee table or hooks in the bathroom might provide the difference between usable and missing a link.

In this blog, we are going to give you some secrets to styling your bathroom so you can get the same look! And of course some of our favorite products you can purchase…

Accessorizing a bathroom serves dual purposes: functionality and aesthetics. While aesthetics are important for creating a visually pleasing space, functionality takes precedence. Functional accessories like bathmats and towels are essential for our daily routines. Beyond these necessities, the enjoyable part begins with selecting items such as hooks and art to add character and personality to the bathroom. Keep reading to learn a few of my secrets.

MATS & RUGS

A great bathmat is crucial in a space to avoid slippage and water damage to your floor. Depending on the style, you may need to replace it often. This comes down to what kind of materials you want to use. We love this Brooklinen mat for that lush, white hotel feeling in your own home. The white, terry material does mean that it will need to be maintained more often to avoid dinginess. For a more practical mat, we LOVE Chilewich. They are resistant to mold and mildew, as well as waterproof and non-skid. These bad boys stay clean and work hard so you don’t have to. To take it up another notch, we love using indoor-outdoor rugs as a way to both elevate and add function to your bathroom. This washable and scrubbable rug from Annie Selke will keep your space dry AND beautiful. Just make sure you add a rug pad.

TOWELS

Monograms are my jam when it comes to towels. Towels are an obvious necessity in the bathroom. To store, I always have mine hanging on a hook, never a towel bar or tucked away. They are out in the open drying, so they need to make a statement. Literally. Of course, my towel color needs to meet my vibe, but I have taken them to the next level, by monogramming. But not your typical initials in a curly font…predictable. I put inspirational phrases on my towels so that every time my kids reach for a towel they are reminded:  “Wipe up,” “Put the seat down,” “Represent (insert last name),” “Gratitude starts with you” and “Bring the joy.” Have fun with it! Put their nickname on the towel, or a chore they always forget. It works!

These Crate & Barrel towels offer great font options for a clean personalized moment. These Lands’ End towels let you have a bit of fun by adding text, an embroidered image, or both. If you want to add a bit of “wow” but not go the monogram route, these Parachute Home towels are a new favorite of ours. They add the perfect pop of color and add interest with a cool pattern.

In our Dosch Road Project’s primary bath, we wanted these Visual Comfort sconces to steal the show. Because of this, we kept accessorizing minimal with a simple catch-all box to add contrast and a soothing art piece to enjoy while in the tub. Photo by Dibble.

HOOKS

Hanging your towels can be challenging. If you're like me, the towel bar is not an option. A hook is a great way to practically hang your towel while creating an opportunity for a statement piece. You can get a simple hook for a towel or bathrobe that matches the metal finish on your plumbing hardware. However, have you ever introduced wood or stone to your hooks to add something unexpected? These ceramic SIN hooks add an organic flare to a bathroom, and they don’t compete or repeat the plumbing finish. It achieves a clean sophistication and natural vibe.

ART

Sometimes people overlook the bathroom as a place to display art. If selected properly and to scale, it brings instant color and joy and is often reflected in the mirror, allowing you to see and enjoy from different vantage points. A great place for art, where there is often space no matter your layout, is over the toilet. For fun bathroom art, we love these bright and cheery painting by our friend and local artist, Mandy Kav Art. However, the best-framed pieces in bathrooms are meaningful paintings or finds from travels.

In essence, sprucing up your bathroom is all about finding the perfect balance between functionality and flair. Start by investing in practical accessories like bathmats and towels to streamline your daily routine. Then, unleash your creativity by incorporating personalized elements such as monogrammed towels and statement hooks. And don't underestimate the transformative power of art—whether it's a whimsical painting or a cherished photograph, it can add depth and character to your space. With these simple yet effective tips, styling your bathroom becomes an enjoyable and rewarding endeavor.
